Skincare Routine 101: Tips for Healthy and Glowing Skin
Consistency is the key to achieving healthy, glowing skin. With so many products and techniques out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. In this guide, we'll break down the essential steps for a basic skincare routine or what I like to call a “skincare skeleton” that will leave your skin looking its best.
Step 1: Cleanse
Cleansing is the foundation of any good skincare routine. It removes dirt, excess oil, makeup, and other impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Choose a gentle, non-drying cleanser that won't strip your skin or impair the skin’s barrier. Massage the cleanser into your skin using circular motions, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use your hands and avoid wash clothes or other abrasive tools.
Step 2: Antioxidants
Incorporating antioxidants into your routine can help protect your skin from environmental stressors like pollution and UV exposure. One powerful antioxidant serum is SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, which combines vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid to neutralize free radicals and boost your skin's radiance.
Step 3: Moisturize
Moisturizing is crucial for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin. Choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type – look for lighter serums or lotions if you have oily skin, or richer creams if you have dry skin. Don't forget to moisturize your neck and décolletage (aka your chest) area, too.
Step 4: Protect
The final step in your skincare routine should be sun protection. Exposure to UV rays can lead to premature aging, sunspots, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum, mineral based sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days.

Step 5: Exfoliate
Exfoliating helps slough off dead skin cells, revealing the fresh, radiant skin underneath. Aim to exfoliate 1-2 times per week with a chemical exfoliator.. Those with younger or more sensitive skin may want to exfoliate less frequently. A glycolic wash as it is less harsh on the skin than mechanical exfoliators like scrubs and less drying and irritating than leave on AHA/BHAs. As you reach your 40s, skin cell turnover does slow so consider increasing the frequency of your chemical exfoliating to 3-4 times per week.
Step 6: Personalization (Medications, Anti-Aging, Serums, etc)
Everyone is wonderfully unique so it’s important to customize your skincare routine based on your unique skin type. If you are struggling with rashes, acne, bumps, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone or texture, see a dermatologist who can incorporate medicated creams, ointments or serums into your routine. Additionally, if you are wanting to prevent or treat signs of aging a consultation with a dermatologist can be helpful to discuss retinoids, peptides and procedures to treat and prevent signs of aging.
Step 7: Avoid Toner
You may notice this routine does not include toning the skin. Skip the toning. Most toners are alcohol based and can lead to dry, irritated skin. Toners are not a necessary step in your skincare routine.
Step 8: Consistency & Patience
Remember, consistency is key when it comes to skincare. It may take several weeks or months to see the full benefits of your routine. Be patient, and don't forget to listen to your skin – if a product isn't working for you, don't be afraid to switch it up.
By following these simple steps, you'll be well on your way to achieving a healthy, glowing complexion. Don't hesitate to consult with a dermatologist for personalized advice and recommendations tailored to your specific skin concerns.
